Italy travel: Rome, St. John's, also known as the Basilica of St. John Lateran. This is video of the 'official' home of the Pope, even though he spends more time in the Vatican. Our Perillo Tours Familia enjoys the incredible details on the church walls, where every picture tells a story. This Basilica is " Officially named Archibasilica Sanctissimi Salvatoris ("Archbasilica of the Most Holy Savior"), it is the oldest and ranks first (being the cathedral of Rome) among the four major basilicas of Rome, and holds the title of ecumenical mother church (mother church of the whole inhabited world) among Catholics." Thank you, Wikipedia: "As the cathedral of the Bishop of Rome, containing the papal throne (Cathedra Romana), it ranks above all other churches in the Catholic Church, even above St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican." Italy travel: Rome. St. Peter's Basilica was full of magnificent art work in stone and on canvas. The main walkway right down the middle of the church was cordoned off. This gave our Perillo Tours Familia an opportunity to see the inlaid tiles on the floor. The different stones wear at different rates; the video has a hard time showing the path unevenly worn by the shuffle of millions of feet over the centuries. Italy travel: Rome, Trevi Fountain details. "Trevi" means three roads (tre vie), and this fountain at the junction of three roads marked the end of one of the great Roman aqueducts. Trevi could mean three rivers to account for the volume of water! Video of lots of tourists. Then, our Perillo Tours Familia continues our walk to the Parthenon. Huge columns outside, supporting all of the Pantheon. (You can view this video, and other travel videos in full-size and near-DVD quality, travel stills and more at www.jpmeyer.com).

Italy travel: Rome. Vatican Museum priceless artwork. Some of the presentations are kind of rough, "Passion of the Christ" rough, for our "G" rated Perillo Tours Familia. Some art looks more like stills from an "R" rated medieval battle movie, as opposed to something you would expect to see in the high holy house of Catholicism. (Must be this untrained eye's assumptions.) Still, one awe-inspiring series of hallways! The Vatican Museum: it just goes on and on. Lastly, President Richard M. Nixon presented Pope Paul VI with some "rocks" collected from our moon. Moon "rocks" indeed. The video shows no perspective of the display, unfortunately, but the audible laughter plus the background comment "The lint in my pocket is bigger" should give you an idea of how small these moon specks really are. Italy travel: Rome, almost back to our hotel. The video shows the Italian High Court, and a view of St. Peter's Basilica from a bridge. We're practically back to our Perillo Tours hotel, so you can see we were very nicely located. However, Rome is not a walking town. Too big. We circle around the courthouse, which is only about 95 years old. Our 48 passenger bus navigated these streets very well! Italy travel: On our way to Pisa! Florence Ponte Vecchio. We had more time later for exploration. This footage is our Perillo Tours Familia walk back to our hotel, and some footage from the bus. First, a river rower contemplating the minor waterfall of the Arno River. (Interestingly enough, Pisa also lies on the Arno River, despite the 90 minute drive between the two cities!) Then some hillside villages on the way to Pisa. We passed a true Roman water aqueduct, which would certainly have been worth a stop. We're on our way to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa!

Italy travel: Entry to the Roman Colosseum amphitheater along with all the others tourists. Again, perspective fails in the video, but that doesn't stop us from trying! Our Perillo Tours Familia takes as many pictures as possible - every different vantage point gives a new opportunity. (You can view this video, and other travel videos in full-size and near-DVD quality, travel stills and more at www.jpmeyer.com).

Italy travel: Rome, more video exploration of the Pantheon. The pantheon is built as a tribute to ALL the Roman gods, named for the days of the week. The explanation/translation made more sense when the days of the week were said in Italian, but Saturday was for Saturn, Sunday was for the Sun, etc. There were more interesting facts presented by our Perillo Tours guide than could possibly be recounted in one short video. (You can view this video, and other travel videos in full-size and near-DVD quality, travel stills and more at www.jpmeyer.com).

Italy travel: Rome, approaching the Trevi Fountain. Here our Perillo Tours Familia is walking down a typical two way street on the way to the Trevi Fountain. Just kidding, it's really a one way street packed with tourists, cars, motorcycles, and restaurant tables. Wow, the Trevi Fountain is actually much bigger in person than it looks! Hopefully the video will show that. Lots of street vendors, an Egyptian Pharoh, and a Roman Soldier wander about. (You can view this video, and other travel videos in full-size and near-DVD quality, travel stills and more at www.jpmeyer.com).

Italy travel: Rome, video of more catacombs, and the most elaborately decorated crypt of our tour. All of the Apostles are drawn on the inside of the arch, such that the occupant(s) would 'see' the drawing. The person who was laid to rest here must have been very important to warrant such a tomb with a view. On our Perillo Tours of Rome we have gone from the Sistine Chapel to this painted arch in the Catacombs. Both artists worked on their backs for a long time to perform their tasks, but the artist in the catacombs did it by candlelight amongst the stench of 10,000 decaying corpses. Probably rats and flies, too. (You can view this video, and other travel videos in full-size and near-DVD quality, travel stills and more at www.jpmeyer.com).
