You can probably get some cheap cabins in the mountains, do the winter wondrland kind of thing. There's plenty within 10 hours drive, great museums in Kansas City, do the Indy experience, check out Tulsa. Do you camp? It's great for the kids, a nice bonding experience. You can rent tents, sleeping bags, etc. Or just rent the tent and bring a lot of blankets. Eastern Mountain Sports can give you advice, and they used to rent gear. If they don't, they will find the information for you. Find a car camping place with on site grills.
