I would have to go with Texas Chainsaw Massacre (although the only one I saw was the one with Zellweger and McConaughey) but those were supposedly based on real-life murders.

Well the one that made me go wow that's terrible was from the movie "Heavenly Creatures" and the fact that these two girls couldn't bear to be apart so they murdered one's mother. The scene in the movie creeped me out for days it was terrible. More disturbing than scary though.
