We'd like to do a family reunion sort of vacation this summer, with all of our sisters & brothers bringing their children (and adult children & their children) to a lake somewhere about two or three hours from Chicago - preferably north to Wisconsin or Michigan.
We'd like it to be rustic, away from big city excitement (but close to a small town w/groceries & a restaurant).
The resort should be on a lake with at least 10 cabins available so that each family can have their own place.
Any suggestions?
I dont know about north, but in utica illinois, a little over an hour south west of Chicago there is a place called Grand Bear Lodge. It does not have a lake, but it it right off of a river, and right by Starved Rock, which is amazing. There are also several other creeks, rivers, and canyons close by. Starved rock is beautiful and great for the family. It is a buch of trails, cliffs, and canyons, and they also have a lodge, and a bunch of cabins. I only suggest to stay in the cabins at grand bear by starved rock (instead of staved rock), because they have an indoor water park, and other fun activities.
I am not sure what exactly you are looking for, but starved rock, and grand bear both have quite a bit to offer, if you want to get away from the city. Utica is a small town prolly not even 1000 pop. with a bunch of antique shops, and a couple bars and restraunts, it is very cute. Close by to the west is Peru which has a small mall and restraunts like applebees,etc. or the the east is Ottawa with a Cracker Barrel etc. There a million things to do in this area (I&M canal for bike riding, or walking, starved rock or buffalo rock for hiking and picnics, the Illinois river and the Fox river meet in Ottawa, and the Vermillion River runs by Utica, and so does the Illinois.)
You should look this up if your interested, its right off of I80 W. Sorry I dont know anything north. hope this helps.
